Pirates Maps And Traps
As software and digital media become more prevalent, piracy does as well. The abilities of pirates seem to grow faster than the safety measures that companies create, and now all you have to do to pirate sophisticated, expensive software is download a torrent and — more or less — move a file from one directory to another or double click on a crack. If, for example, Adobe can’t prevent you from actually obtaining and using Photoshop for free, a smarter idea would be to make the experience of using it so obnoxious that you give up and purchase a legit copy.
You can still pirate and run the software below (not that you should), but they each have a failsafe to make using the pirated copy so obnoxious that you’ll knock it off and make the purchase.
Serious Sam 3: BFE
Normally, a game’s anti-piracy measure consists of not allowing you to load the game. In Serious Sam 3: BFE, you can load the game and play it just fine. However, the dev team employed a giant, invincible, extremely fast pink scorpion-man to chase you around the entire map, attacking you like any enemy NPC would, repeatedly killing you so you can’t make any progress.
Tweetbot
Games tend to be high-priority piracy targets, and due to the creativity of the medium itself developers have become very creative with anti-piracy measures. Though gaming is home to a large portion of anti-piracy measures, those measures aren’t solely reserved for gaming. Twitter client Tweetbot doesn’t force users to tweet a message admitting their piracy, but it does autofill the tweet entry field with that message. Users can remove the message every time they tweet and enter their own, but even if one doesn’t eventually slip through and reveal that you pirated the software, the auto-filled message will still be a giant nuisance.
Game Dev Tycoon
After Game Dev Story blew up on mobile, the genre experienced a quick surge in popularity, which led to Game Dev Tycoon releasing on PC. Developer Greenheart Games released two versions of its game — a legit version for purchase, and a torrented “pirated” version. The fake pirated version included an in-game mechanic that would thwart the progress of the player’s game development business by causing their games to be pirated, damaging sales.
Earthbound
The SNES cult classic Earthbound employed many methods of copy protection, but when all of the initial layers were hacked away or bypassed, one last line of defense was left. It was more much more obnoxious and clever than simply preventing players from being able to load a pirated version. When you made it to the final boss, the game would freeze, delete all of your save files, then reset itself, causing you to lose all of your progress.
Mirror’s Edge
The parkour game was all about running to build up enough speed to jump over gaps and gain enough momentum to climb up generally impossible-to-climb structures. In order to make sure pirates have a bad time and contemplate purchasing a legit copy, Electronic Arts made it so the game’s main character, Faith, would exponentially slow down right before a jump or climb, making it impossible to succeed.

@SaikyoChamp Oh that? It means you should probably buy the game instead of pirate it. o:)

Skullgirls Encore
Sometimes, the best method to curb piracy is to publicly shame or embarrass a pirate. Twitter user Dan Hibiki experienced this notion when he pirated Skullsgirls Encore, and was met with a mysterious message after he beat the game: “What is the square root of a fish? Now I’m sad.” He tweeted at the developers asking what the message meant, and it turns out that the message only appears in a pirated copy. The little Twitter incident was amusing enough to be carried by various news outlets, so pirates likely won’t publicly inquire about that message anymore and accidentally reveal their misdeeds; a quick Google search will explain the cryptic question.
